VERIFY

VERIFYING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Introduction

VERIFY is a Research and Innovation project funded by the European Commission under the H2020 programme. VERIFY develops a system to estimate greenhouse gas emissions to support countries' emission reporting to the UN Climate Change Convention Secretariat. The emissions are estimated based on land, ocean and atmospheric observations. The project focuses on the three major greenhouse gases responsible for global warming: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) (https://verify.lsce.ipsl.fr/).
EDGAR yearly contributes to the VERIFY project with sector specific global emissions fluxes of CH4 and N2O with monthly time resolution and 0.1x0.1 degree spatial resolution from the year 2005 to most recent years.
The latest EDGAR contribution to VERIFY is based on the EDGARv6.0 pre-release which is an update of the EDGARv5.0 data (https://edgar.jrc.ec.europa.eu/overview.php?v=50_GHG) and consists of:

  • emissions from fossil fuel combustion estimated using a Fast Track approach as described in Crippa et al. (2019),
  • process emissions are estimated based on Crippa et al. (2019),
  • updated agricultural emissions using the FAO (2019) data,
  • updated landfills emissions up to the year 2018,
  • all other sectors are kept constant as in 2015, with the exception of indirect emissions which have been recalculated
