Greenhouse Gas Emissions at sub-national level

EDGAR v8.0 GHG NUTS2

Introduction

The EDGAR GHG emission gridmaps represents an independent and reliable source of information to support the analysis and development of territorial policies at sub-national level in the field of climate action. Thanks to the continuous update and improvement of the accuracy of the spatial proxies used in the EDGAR database to downscale national emissions over a global gridmap, the regional NUTS2 GHG emissions produced by EDGAR over the European domain are used by DG REGIO in the EU Cohesion Reports (2022) and support the yearly cycle of the EU Semester.

Detailed information on the spatial proxies used in EDGAR and the downscaling methodology can be found in several scientific publications (Janssens-Maenhout et al., 2019; Crippa et al., 2021; Crippa et al., 2023).

GHG emissions by NUTS2

Annual time series (1990-2022) of GHG emissions at NUTS2 (regional) level

Based on the EDGARv8.0 GHG emission gridmaps up to 2022 (Crippa et al. 2023), NUTS2 emissions by sector and EU country are extracted.
NUTS2 definitions are based on EUROSTAT 2021 (release NUTS 2021 (shapefile at 01M))
