Global Air Pollutant Emissions

EDGAR v5.0

Introduction

EDGARv5.0 provides emissions not only for the greenhouse gases per sector and country but also for the air pollutants:

  • Ozone precursor gases: Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOC) and Methane (CH4).
  • Acidifying gases: Ammonia (NH3), Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).
  • Primary particulates: Fine Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5 and Carbonaceous speciation (BC, OC).

Emissions from large scale biomass burning with Savannah burning, forest fires, and sources and sinks from land-use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) are excluded.

For the energy related sectors the activity data are mainly based on the energy balance statistics of IEA (2017) (Internet: link), whereas the activity data for the agricultural sectors originate mainly from FAO (2018) (Internet: link). Additional information can be found in Crippa et al. (2019).

Novelties compared to previous EDGAR release (EDGARv4.3.2 (Crippa et al., 2018)) are:

  • new temporal profiles to compute monthly and hourly emissions (Crippa et al., 2020, in press),
  • new spatial proxies to distribute population-related emissions based on the Global Human Settlements Layer product (Pesaresi et al., 2019),
  • updates in the technologies, emission factors and end-of-pipe reductions for the power generation sector (for Europe, China and USA) based on the Platts 2018 database, and the implementation of the regulation taking place in these regions,
  • updates in the technologies, emission factors and end-of-pipe reductions for the road transport sector (for Europe only). These updates are based on the EMISIA 2018 data,
  • estimates of particulate matter emissions from road surface wear and road vehicle tyre and break wear based on the EMEP/EEA guidebook 2019 Tier 1 approach (link).
